Working Week
The soul jazz band was formed in 1983 around the nucleus of Simon Booth (b. 12 March 1956; guitar) and Larry Stabbins (b. 9 September 1949; saxophone) as an offshoot of the soft jazz-influenced group Weekend. Adopting a harder jazz/Latin direction, Working Week commanded much music press attention and, in particular, "style" magazines (Blitz and The Face), who latched on to the band's connection with the London jazz dance teams. Their radical image was strengthened by Booth and Stabbins left-wing allegiances, borne out on their 1984 debut single on Paladin/Virgin Records, "Venceremos (We Will Win)". The song, dedicated to the Chilean protest singer V¡ctor Jara, included guest vocals from Tracey Thorn, Robert Wyatt and Claudia Figueroa. The follow-up, "Storm Of Light' featured Julie Tippetts on lead vocals. In time, the group recruited a permanent lead vocalist in Juliet Roberts. After her departure in 1988, Working Week reverted to the system of guest vocalists until the addition of a new vocalist in Yvonne Waite for 1991"s Black And Gold.
