Corduroy
UK acid jazz outfit, affectionately known as "the Fabric Four", formed in 1991 by Scott Addison (vocals/keyboards), Ben Addison (drums), Simon Nelson-Smith (guitar), and Richard Searle (bass). Identical twins Ben and Scott Addison had originally performed together in early 80s punk band Brigandage. Searle, meanwhile, enjoyed a brief period of pop stardom with psych pop one-hit-wonders Doctor And The Medics, but after becoming disillusioned with the band's increasingly commercial direction he elected to make a new start, joining the Addison twins in pop-art outfit Boys Wonder. Corduroy emerged in December 1991 when the three members of Boys Wonder were asked to form a group to perform funk and jazz cover versions at a New Year's Eve party. With guitarist Nelson-Smith completing the line-up, the newly fledged quartet enjoyed the gig so much that they began performing their predominantly instrumental set around the London club scene. A recording contract with hip Acid Jazz Records ensued and Corduroy was soon being mentioned in the same breath as acid jazz scene leaders such as Mother Earth and the James Taylor Quartet.
