Galliano
This sprawling UK outfit enjoyed a fruitful period in the spotlight at the height of acid jazz's popularity in the late 80s and early 90s. The band was formed by new age rapper and jazz poet Rob Gallagher (b. 1966, England), who was originally inspired by a school visit to see Linton Kwesi Johnson, and subsequently retraced rap's origins to the Last Poets. When he left school Gallagher began broadcasting on pirate radio and made appearances on the underground poetry circuit. The most important of these dates was at Gilles Peterson's Babylon club in Charing Cross, London. There he enthusiastically partook of the resident rare groove/jazz sounds, and incorporated these as his musical backing. He released his first record, "Frederick Lies Still', a tribute to Curtis Mayfield and Last Poets" Jalal Nuridin, with Peterson, but his first vinyl as Galliano was to be "Welcome To The Story". Galliano became an intrinsic component in the rise of Acid Jazz Records, building a fruitful relationship with producer Chris Bangs.
