Youngbloodz
The late 90s saw the emergence of an all-new sub genre of rap, dubbed "dirty south". Created by acts such as the Goodie Mob and Outkast, it did not take long before other groups followed their lead, including the Atlanta, Georgia-based duo YoungBloodz. Members J-Bo (b. Jeffrey Ray Grigsby, Atlanta, Georgia, USA) and Sean Paul (b. Sean Paul Joseph, Atlanta, Georgia, USA) had a mutual love of rap that eventually brought the two together. They soon began working on their rhymes, and a move into a nearby apartment of local producer Big Floatie proved to be an important stepping stone in their career. It turns out that the locale was a hot spot for other up-and-coming rappers, producers, and artists to meet and swap ideas (known as the Attic Crew). Soon after, J-Bo and Sean Paul formed their own rap outfit, dubbed the YoungBloodz, that led to a recording contract with LaFace Records. In 1999, the duo released their debut, Against Da Grain, but despite touring the USA alongside Goodie Mob and Outkast, the album failed to connect with a large audience, as it barely reached the US Top 100 charts (although the single "U Way (How We Do It)" fared well on the rap charts). The duo hooked up with different producers, including "crunk' king Lil' Jon, Track Boyz, Jazze Pha, and the Attic Crew's own Mark Twayne, to record Drankin' Patnaz. The album rocketed into the Top 5 of the US album chart in June 2003, while the Lil" Jon-produced "Damn!" did the same on the singles chart. YoungBloodz were helped by the massive popularity of anything related to crunk in 2003 and, unsurprisingly, by the time they released their third album in 2005 they had slipped out of fashion.
