Praga Khan
The pseudonym of highly successful Belgian dance music DJ/producer Maurice Engelen, who has enjoyed worldwide success with releases by Lords Of Acid, Channel X, Digital Orgasm and Praga Khan. Engelen was a pioneer of "new beat', an early European precursor of the acid house and techno scenes based around Brussels" Happy House club. Engelen first collaborated with Chris Inger and Jade 4U (b. Nikkie Van Lierop) as Shakti, releasing the mini-album Demonic Forces in 1988. During the next three years, this partnership released several records under various pseudonyms, including Dirty Harry, 101, Jade 4U and Praga Khan. The most successful of these was the 1989 Lords Of Acid track "I Sit On Acid", a hedonistic anthem to sex which was a big hit in clubs. In 1991, Engelen and Van Lierop (aka Darling Nikkie) teamed up with Oliver Adams to produce a series of controversial (because of their drug connotations) rave anthems under the MNO banner. These included hits by Praga Khan ("Injected With A Poison"), Channel X ("Groove To Move"), and Digital Orgasm ("Running Out Of Time'), but the most successful release proved to be the debut long-player by Lords Of Acid, Lust. In the USA the production team was signed to Rick Rubin's American Recordings, and provided soundtrack music for the Sharon Stone movies Basic Instinct and Sliver. Further soundtrack work followed, as well as 1994"s Japanese number 1 dance hit ("Take It To The Top") under the guise of Channel X. Engelen and Adams broke into the alternative rock market in 1996 with their Tattoo Of Pain project, which in turn led to remix work for Alice In Chains, White Zombie and Corrosion Of Conformity. The ever-busy Engelen continues to divide his time between solo work, soundtrack commissions and numerous side projects, including a revived Lords Of Acid.
