June Of 44
After the experimental Louisville, Kentucky, USA outfit Rodan broke up shortly after the release of their sole album, 1994's Rusty, most of its band members went on to form other projects, including Rachel's and June Of 44. The latter outfit was founded by former Rodan guitarist Jeff Mueller, who after relocating to Chicago, Illinois, rang up several acquaintances he had met on his travels, including Sean Meadows (vocals/guitar; ex-Lungfish), Fred Erskine (bass; ex-Hoover), and Douglas Scharin (drums). Taking their name from an obscure reference to author Henry Miller (despite Mueller erroneously stating in interviews that it was the month and date his mother was born, and Meadows' grandfather served in World War II), June Of 44 signed on with the Touch & Go subsidiary, Quarterstick, shortly after their formation. Despite the band only remaining together for a few years, they managed to fire off albums at a rapid rate, including Engine Takes To The Water, Tropics And Meridians, Four Great Points, and Anahata, as well as the EPs The Anatomy Of Sharks and In The Fishtank, all issued between 1995 and 1999. The quartet's complex indie rock mined the same dark seam as Rodan and fellow Louisville bands Squirrel Bait and Slint, which although never overly commercial brought June Of 44 a loyal cult following.
