Caifanes
Comprising core members Sa£l Hern ndez (vocals), Alejandro Marcovich (guitar) and Alfonso Andr‚ (drums), the Caifanes formed in Mexico City, Mexico, in the mid-80s. They have subsequently grown to epitomize the vibrancy of the "Rock en Espanol" movement, which has pockets throughout South America as well as Spain and the USA. Combining dark, pagan imagery more readily associated with death metal bands, the Caifanes combine this with lustrous, psychedelic art rock. Frequently compared to the UK's Cure, the group first rose to prominence with a cover version of "La Negra Tomasa'. Typically, this was a native cumbia song thoroughly modernized by the group. The spiritual tone of the group's 1988 debut album addressed decay and death, establishing a precedent for the subsequent El Disablito and El Silencio. Both compressed the musical complexities of the debut to persuasive effect, the latter produced by Adrian Belew. By 1994"s El Nervio Del Volc n the group had adopted a more commercial position while retaining and expanding their previous lyrical ethos. Buoyed by the launch of MTV Latino in 1993, Caifanes had become the most prominent of a clutch of Spanish-language bands including Maldita Vecindad, Cafe Tacuba and Tijuana No.
