Boxer
Formed in 1975, Boxer featured two former members of Patto, Michael Patrick McGrath/Mike Patto (b. 22 September 1942, Glasgow, Scotland, d. 4 March 1979; vocals) and Peter "Ollie" Halsall (b. 14 March 1949, Southport, Merseyside, England, d. 29 May 1992; guitars). The line-up was completed by two experienced musicians, Keith Ellis (bass, ex-Koobas, Juicy Lucy, and Van Der Graaf Generator) and Tony Newman (drums, ex-Sounds Incorporated; Jeff Beck; and May Blitz). Below The Belt is better recalled for the controversy surrounding its tasteless "nude" cover rather than the hard rock unveiled within. The original Boxer broke up when a second album, Bloodletting, was withdrawn and not released until 1979. The singer re-established the group in 1977 with Chris Stainton (keyboards, ex-Grease Band), Adrian Fisher (guitar, ex-Sparks), Tim Bogert (b. 27 August 1944, Richfield, New Jersey, USA; bass, ex-Vanilla Fudge) and Eddie Tuduri (drums). Boxer was dissolved following the release of the disappointing Absolutely. Mike Patto resumed work with the ad hoc unit Hinkley's Heroes, but died in 1979 following a long battle with throat cancer.
