Memphis Bleek
b. Malik Cox, 23 June 1978, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. This New York-based rap artist was raised in the same Marcy Projects as his mentor, Jay-Z. Cox survived the trials and temptations of his neighbourhood by opting to use his rapping talent to pursue a career in music. He adopted the moniker Memphis Bleek, with the Memphis a rather crude acronym for Making Easy Money Pimping Hoes In Style, and the Bleek coming from his little sister's mispronunciation of his first name. He made appearances as a guest rapper on several Roc-A-Fella releases, including Jay-Z's Vol. 2 ... Hard Knock Life, before releasing his 1999 debut, Coming Of Age. Bleek was rather outclassed by his guest artists on this clich‚-ridden gangsta rap release, a problem partly redressed on his second album, The Understanding.
