Carrie Newcomer
b. 25 May 1958, Dowagiac, Michigan, USA. Bloomington, Indiana-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Carrie Newcomer grew up in a Quaker household in Chicago and later studied Fine Art and Education at Purdue University. In the mid-80s she played alongside guitarist Larry Smeyak and percussionist Dennis Leas in the folk trio Stone Soup, releasing two albums on her Windchime label. She branched out into solo work at the start of the following decade with Visions And Dreams, recorded while she was in the middle of divorce proceedings. The album's examination of a failed relationship established Newcomer as an acute but sincere lyricist dealing openly with the vagaries of the human condition. Her exquisite guitar work and melodic touch, meanwhile, marked Newcomer out as a solid upholder of the folk tradition.
