Toshi Reagon
b. Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The daughter of celebrated black liberation and civil rights scholar and vocalist Bernice Johnson Reagon, Toshi is an accomplished singer-songwriter who often covers similar subject matter. Her mother helped co-produce her 1985 debut album, Demonstration, which distilled black folk and soul traditions through appealing arrangements of electric, acoustic and rhythm guitar, plus drums, bass and vocals (all from Toshi). She also proved herself adept at working within various tempos and styles. Justice, released by Chicago's Flying Fish Records, concentrated on original compositions, with the exception of "Walking In Your Footsteps' (Sting) and a piece by Georgia Sea Island. Bernice Reagon was present again, joined by vocalist Judith Casselberry and percussionist Annette Aguliar. Reagon remains a superb live performer, regaling the audience with anecdotes, stories and jokes as well as songs. She has recorded sporadically during the 90s, completing an album for Smithsonian/Folkways Records in 1997, before signing to Razor & Tie Records for 1999"s higher profile release, The Righteous Ones. The opening track, "Real Love", featured her recording for the first time with Sweet Honey In The Rock, the vocal group founded by her mother in 1973.
