Louchie Lou/Michie One
Female duo Louchie Lou and Michie One met at a Rebel MC gig in 1991, and quickly found the backing of independent label Fashion Records for their debut single "Rich Girl". Switching to London Records in 1993, they released an exuberant version of Lulu's "Shout' which stayed in the UK Top 10 for eight weeks. After protracted legal wranglings they eventually signed to China Records in 1994, working on their delayed debut album in Jamaica with Sly And Robbie, and then in Los Angeles, California with Quincy Jones' son QDIII (Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur). A diverse blend of reggae rhythms with elements of dancehall, pop, R&B and hip-hop, I'll Be Free"s material did not always do justice to the production talent on show, although the club hit "Champagne And Wine" and the funky "Free" were notable highlights. The video for the Top 40 "Good Sweet Lovin'" included a cameo appearance from Suggs, resulting in the duo guesting on the ex-Madness singer's hit single "Cecilia". They also went on to headline the Japansplash Festival alongside Shaggy, Snow and Barrington Levy, performing to audiences of over 100,000, while further tours of Japan and the Far East served to strengthen their popularity in the Asian market. Danger-Us was released in September 1997, and featured a more mature and full sound. Ranging from the reggae/dancehall workouts "Before The Night Is Over" and "Kingman", through an excursion into salsa ("The Crickets Sing For Ana Maria"), to the modern urban soul of "You'll Never Know" and "I Knew I Blew It", the album again featured QDIII and Sly And Robbie, with additional production work by the in-demand Jazzwad (Buju Banton, Shabba Ranks) and Buzz Productions (Maxi Priest, Barrington Levy). The duo left China in spring 1998 and signed a new recording contract with Interscope Records.
