Spirits Of Rhythm
First formed in the late 20s by the brothers Wilbur and Douglas Daniels, the group performed under various names. By 1930 the band was making its way in New York City, having added Leo Watson to its ranks. In 1932, with Teddy Bunn on hand, the name was changed from the Five Cousins to the Spirits Of Rhythm and the group quickly established a reputation for highly entertaining performances. The instrumentation of the group was unusual. The Daniels brothers and Watson all sang and played the tiple - a stringed instrument, rather like a small guitar, of South American origin which has 10 strings with pairs and triples tuned in octaves.
