Eiffel 65
This Turin, Italy-based trio, comprising singer Jeffrey Jey (b. 1970, Sicily, Italy), keyboard player Maurizio Lobina, and DJ Gabriele Ponte, is closely associated with Massimo Gabutti's hugely successful BlissCorporation label. The trio rose to prominence in 1999 when (helped by extensive radio airplay) they scored an enormous hit in Europe with "Blue (Da Ba Dee)". The cloying, infectious single was a number 1 in 16 countries across Europe as well as in Canada and Australia. In the UK, it sold more than a million copies and remained at the top of the charts for three weeks. Perhaps best described as "bubblegum-dance", the track featured nonsense lyrics, vocals filtered through a vocoder and an unusual video. It was also a Top 10 hit in the USA. The follow-up "Move Your Body", was a number 1 single in their native Italy before becoming another Top 10 hit in the rest of Europe. The aptly-titled debut, Europop, released in February 2000, exhibited a range of dance styles but the disposability of their first hits would make it difficult to establish themselves as a credible act in dance music.
