DJ Jean
b. Jan Engelaar, 1971, Netherlands. DJ Jean is Holland's number one DJ/producer and initially became famous for his Friday night residency at the "Madhouse" night at Amsterdam's It! Club. He also DJs across Europe, in Tel Aviv and in clubland's headquarters, Ibiza. Engelaar also has his own record label, It Records, and is an in-demand remixer for Masters At Work, Airscape and Full Intention. He also releases his own productions with recording partner, Peran, and hosts a Saturday night mix show on the Dutch national radio station, 538. His mix albums such as Around The World With DJ Jean and Strictly DJ Jean have reached number 1 in the Dutch charts. Engelaar's first two hit singles, "U Got My Love" and "The Launch" appeared on the Mo Bizz label, owned by his Dutch compatriots, the Klubbheads. It was the UK DJ, "Tall" Paul Newman who popularised "The Launch" in UK clubs in March 1999, when it was only available as an import. Before long, other powerful figures in the UK dance music scene such as Pete Tong and Judge Jules were including it in their club sets and national radio shows. Almost laughably simple, the track was also enormously crowd-pleasing on the dancefloor and its distinctive horn fanfare became part of the soundtrack to a thousand Saturday nights all over Europe. Having already created a wave of interest through the clubs and radio during the summer, "The Launch" was finally given a full UK release on the Island/Universal dance imprint AM:PM in August 1999. DJ Jean made several appearances on UK television and at clubs and the record climbed to number 2 in the national charts in September 1999. It also appeared on numerous club-based mix compilations, retrospectives of the year and millennium dance music "cash-ins".
