Ronald Shannon Jackson
b. 12 January 1940, Fort Worth, Texas, USA. Jackson studied piano at the age of five, taking up clarinet and drums at school. He began professional work when he was 15, gigging regularly in Dallas with James Clay and Leroy Cooper who were then in the Ray Charles' band. He studied history and sociology before gaining a music scholarship in New York, where he drummed with artists including Albert Ayler, Charles Tyler, Betty Carter, Charles Mingus and Stanley Turrentine. From 1975-79 Jackson played alongside James "Blood" Ulmer in the Ornette Coleman Sextet, which evolved into Prime Time, and also worked with Cecil Taylor.
