Methods Of Mayhem
As the drug-inhaling, Jack Daniels-guzzling glam-rock behemoth that was M”tley Cre finally started to lose momentum in the late 90s, drummer Tommy Lee (b. Thomas Bass, 3 October 1962, Athens, Greece) left to form his own band. A notorious media figure over and above the enormous excesses of M”tley Cre, Lee had come to infamy in the latter half of the decade owing to the sordid tale of his marriage to and subsequent divorce from the actress Pamela Anderson. That story had involved wife-beating, imprisonment, rehab and an ubiquitous home video depicting the couple's most intimate moments. What better time, then, for Lee, now clean, single and supposedly rehabilitated, to launch his own project? In 1998 he announced that he would be devoting his attentions full-time to Methods Of Mayhem, a solo rap-metal project in which he would sing and play all instruments with the assistance of the studio and programming expert TiLo (b. Tim Murray). The following autumn the duo signed to MCA Records and a host of stars queued up to make guest appearances: these included Kid Rock, George Clinton, Mixmaster Mike of the Beastie Boys, Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland of the Crystal Method, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Snoop Dogg and Lil' Kim. Predictably, the resulting self-titled album lacked any recognisable identity. On the other hand, the live shows that followed its release were almost universally praised. The departure of TiLo in early 2001 left Lee working on new material under his own name.
