Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
One of the most idiosyncratic bands to emerge from the Welsh indie scene of the mid-90s, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci followed Super Furry Animals in getting Welsh language music onto mainstream radio. The band was formed in Carmarthen by school friends Euros Childs (b. Freshwater East, Pembrokeshire, Wales; vocals/keyboards), Richard James (bass) and John Lawrence (guitar), later joined by Euros Rowlands (drums) and Megan Childs (violin). After recording demo tapes in their bedrooms (later released on Patio), the band was signed to the Gwynedd-based independent label Ankst, and released a 10-inch mini-album, Patio, in 1992. Commenting on the songs written in their native language, Euros Childs later stated: "we used to sing mainly in Welsh just because we didn't really expect to be heard outside Wales". Touring gave a curious press an opportunity to review the band, whose quasi-medieval music was matched by their retro-hippy garb, leading to inevitable comparisons with the Incredible String Band.
