The Capris
This R&B vocal group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, comprised Rena Hinton, Bobby Smart, Eddie Warner, Harrison Scott, and Reuben White. Their one claim to fame was "God Only Knows" (not the Beach Boys' hit) in 1954, which featured the quivering and fetching lead of Hinton. His vocals typified the delicate high-pitched lead work of Philadelphia doo-wop groups. The Capris originally formed in the early 50s in west Philadelphia, and in 1953 established their recording configuration when original member Charlie Stroud left the group to be replaced by Hinton. The Capris signed with Gotham in June 1954. "God Only Knows" attracted considerable east coast play and they made radio and television appearances. The follow-ups, "It's A Miracle" and "It Was Moonglow", both ballads featuring the same vocal approach, were fine examples of the Philadelphia sound, but they did not sustain the group's commercial success. When some of the members entered the Air Force in early 1955, the Capris were forced to disband. The group re-formed in 1958, with Fred Hale replacing Harrison Scott. They recorded "My Weakness", but its lack of success served to break up the group for good. Some members of the Capris later formed the Moniques.
