Andy Statman
b. 1950, New York City, New York, USA. Born into a musical and religious atmosphere, Statman was influenced by Jewish cantors and klezmer music. A change came when he heard Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs on record. Taking up the mandolin he was tutored by David Grisman from 1965, becoming a notable exponent. He played in a progressive bluegrass band and from the early 70s also worked as a session musician, partly in Nashville, appearing with artists such as David Bromberg, Vassar Clements and Bob Dylan.
