Texas Tornados
Following the success of the Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson), four Tex-Mex musicians formed the Texas Tornados and secured a contract with a major label, Reprise/WEA Records. Doug Sahm (b. 6 November 1941, San Antonio, Texas, USA, d. 18 November 1999, Taos, New Mexico, USA) and organist Augie Meyers (b. 31 May 1940, San Antonio, Texas, USA), who had been part of the Sir Douglas Quintet and had frequently worked together, were joined by accordionist Flaco Jimnez (b. Leonardo Jimnez, 11 March 1939, San Antonio, Texas, USA) and one-time country star Freddy Fender (b. Baldemar G. Huerta, 4 June 1937, San Benito, Texas, USA, d. 14 October 2006, Corpus Christi, USA). Their enthusiastic debut, Texas Tornados, was both a commercial success and a Grammy winner. In the event, Fender and Jimnez were absent from several tracks and the album, with its mixture of country, blues and Mexican music, was similar to what Sahm and Meyers had been playing for years.
