Nobukazu Takemura
b. 26 August 1968, Osaka, Japan. The Kyoto-based Takemura is an experimentalist who creates music from damaged CDs, has soundtracked fashion shows for Issey Miyake, and, intriguingly, supplied the sounds for Sony's robotic AIBO dog. Takemura began recording in high school using guitars and pianos with a tape recorder, before encountering hip-hop. However, Takemura says he simply liked the sound of the scratching rather than the music as a genre per se. Increasingly disillusioned with having to please a crowd as a battle DJ and drawing inspiration from the manic electronica of the Aphex Twin and the classical minimalism of Steve Reich (whom he has remixed), Takemura was seduced back to his own esoteric productions in the late 80s.
