Keith Green
b. Brooklyn, New York, USA, d. July 1982. Green was born into a religious and musical family and started to sing and play the ukulele at the age of three. He graduated to piano by the age of six, and wrote his first songs as an eight-year-old. His songwriting matured rapidly. At the age of 11 he became the youngest ever member of ASCAP (American Society Of Composers, Authors And Publishers) after negotiating a deal with Decca Records. He travelled extensively during this time, though his performances were still at secular venues. By the early 70s he had become a born again Christian, appearing on television shows such as Barry McGuire's Anyone But Jesus, spreading the word at church congregations throughout California. By this time Green and wife Melody had become staff writers for CBS Records/April Blackwood Music, writing for numerous recording artists, both Christian and secular. With Melody he founded the Last Days Ministries, urging the Christian community to "purge itself" of biblical impurity. His own solo recording career began in the mid-70s with For Him Who Has Ears To Hear for Sparrow Records. Further albums followed, mixing contemporary Christian protest songs with historical church tracts drawing on the literature of nineteenth-century Evangelism. However, at the height of his success he died in a plane crash.
