Meri Wilson
b. 15 June 1949, Nagoya, Japan, d. 28 December 2002, Americus, Georgia, USA. Meri Wilson was behind the 1977 US Top 20/UK Top 10 novelty hit "Telephone Man". Born in Japan, Wilson was raised in Marietta, Georgia and began singing and playing piano and flute in her childhood. After earning a BS in music at Indiana University and a Masters in music education at Georgia State, Wilson turned professional and worked as a jingle singer in the Dallas, Texas area. The innuendo-laden song "Telephone Man" was her own composition and the recording was produced by Owen Castleman and Jim Rutledge. Although Wilson recorded several singles and an album, she never again made the charts and effectively retired from the music industry in the early 80s to raise her family. She released the occasional single and worked as a choral director before quitting teaching in 1995 to return to songwriting. She recorded an updated version of "Telephone Man" called "Internet Man" in 1999 and released a self-titled album. Wilson was killed in an automobile accident in December 2002.
