Leftover Salmon
Although there was a surge of retro, neo-hippie bands in the USA during the 90s (Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd And The Monsters, Phish), few of these outfits mined the bluegrass and country sounds of yesteryear, except for String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon. Originating from Boulder, Colorado, the band's original line-up featured Vince Herman (b. Pennsylvania, USA; vocals/guitar), Mark Vann (b. 28 December 1962, Rockville, Maryland, USA, d. 4 March 2002, Longmont, Colorado, USA; banjo), Drew Emmitt (b. Nashville, Tennessee, USA; vocals/mandolin/guitar), Tye North (bass), and Michael Wooten (drums). The band's formation in 1990 came about as a complete accident, when a local outfit, the Salmon Heads, was missing a few members for a show. On short notice, members of another unit, the Left Hand String Band, were summoned to fill in. The new line-up proved to be the definitive one, as the band jokingly dubbed themselves Leftover Salmon. The quintet quickly built a substantial following by doing what every neo-hippie outfit does, completely bypassing radio and focusing on non-stop touring.
