Dramarama
The 80s were littered with US alt-rock bands that paved the way for the genre's big commercial breakthrough in the early 90s, but never seem to receive proper credit. Top in this category would be the Replacements, the Pixies, and Hsker D, as well as several lesser-known outfits, such as the pop art-inspired Dramarama. Comprising John Easdale (vocals), Mark Englert (guitar), Chris Carter (bass), Peter Wood (guitar), plus a revolving door of drummers, Dramarama originally formed during 1983 in Wayne, New Jersey. They released an obscure single and EP, while their debut album, Cin‚ma V‚rit‚, compiled their previous output alongside six new songs, including what would become their best known track, "Anything, Anything (I'll Give You)". The album helped the band build a sizeable following among college rock devotees and became a major regional hit in Los Angeles. The excellent Box Office Bomb and Stuck In Wonderamaland failed to make any headway in a music scene still in thrall to corporate rock. Further releases continued throughout the early 90s, but despite alternative rock's emergence into the mainstream (via bands like Nirvana), Dramarama failed to latch onto a wider mainstream audience. They split up in 1994, with Easdale eventually launching a solo career during the latter part of the decade.
