Donny Osmond
b. Donald Clark Osmond, 9 December 1957, Ogden, Utah, USA. The most successful solo artist to emerge from family group the Osmonds, Donny was particularly successful at covering old hits. His first solo success came in the summer of 1971 with a cover version of Billy Sherrill's "Sweet And Innocent", which reached the US Top 10. The follow-up, a revival of Gerry Goffin/Carole King's "Go Away Little Girl" (previously a hit for both Steve Lawrence and Mark Wynter) took Osmond to the top of the US charts. "Hey Girl", once a success for Freddie Scott, continued his US chart domination, which was now even more successful than that of the family group. By the summer of 1972, Osmondmania reached Britain, and a revival of Paul Anka's "Puppy Love" gave Donny his first UK number 1. The singer's clean-cut good looks and perpetual smile brought him massive coverage in the pop press, while a back catalogue of hit songs from previous generations sustained his chart career. "Too Young" and "Why" both hit the UK Top 10, while "The Twelfth Of Never" and "Young Love" both reached number 1. His material appeared to concentrate on the pangs of adolescent love, which made him the perfect teenage idol for the period. In 1974, Donny began a series of duets with his sister Marie Osmond, which included more UK Top 10 hits with "I'm Leaving It All Up To You" and "Morning Side Of The Mountain". It was clear that Donny's appeal was severely circumscribed by his youth and in 1977 he tried unsuccessfully to reach a more mature audience with Donald Clark Osmond. Although minor hits followed, the singer's appeal was waning alarmingly by the late 70s.
