Pinback
Armistead Burwell Smith IV aka Zach Smith (b. San Diego, California, USA) and Rob Crow (b. 21 February 1971, New Jersey, USA) formed this San Diego, California-based indie rock unit in 1998. The duo had previously worked on separate projects, Smith with Three Mile Pilot and Crow with Thingy. The name of their new project was taken from the cult science fiction movie Dark Star. The duo began to record music on Smith's home computer before releasing their self-titled debut album in 1999. This collection revealed a highly experimental approach to the lo-fi indie genre, at times projecting an ambient and orchestral sound similar to Danish space pop surrealists Mew. Pinback's 2001 second album, Blue Screen Life, which was also mixed and mastered on Smith's computer, won the band great critical success and showed a vast musical development from the debut. The richly produced "Penelope" demonstrated the layered sound that helped make the duo stand out in indie rock circles.
