Greg Osby
b. 3 August 1960, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Osby is a New York-based saxophonist who has attracted criticism for his attempts to attach jazz's cool to a militant hip-hop beat. Osby began life as an R&B musician, only discovering jazz when he began attending Howard University in 1978. He also studied at Berklee College Of Music, and appeared on the east coast with Woody Shaw, Jon Faddis, Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie and Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition. Osby also worked with the M-Base project, a self-help organization founded by saxophonist Steve Coleman and singer Cassandra Wilson, that attempted to integrate all forms of black music into a new ecumenical style.
