Betty Carter
Originally known as Betty Bebop from her work with Parker and Gillespie in the 1940s, the singer worked with Miles Davis and Max Roach in the 1950s, but often had trouble finding work due to her complex, demanding style. In the 1970s she started her own group, which would become a rigorous training ground for young musicians, and finally gained a full measure of success in the 1980s. Her swooping, melismatic scatting make her voice one of the most distinctive in jazz.
