BR5-49
Regarded by many as the most exciting country rock-inspired band in Nashville since Jason And The Scorchers, BR5-49 arrived in 1996 with a provocative manifesto. As Chuck Mead (b. 22 December 1960, Nevada, Missouri, USA; guitar/vocals) told the press: "I don't want it to be seen as some kind of planned competition to stamp out new country. But that'd be nice, because it sucks." Mead had formerly played as a child in the Family Tree, a gospel hillbilly band made up of relatives, then Kansas roots rock group the Homestead Grays (one EP, Big Hits, and a CD, El Supremo, in 1991). The other founding members of BR5-49 were Gary Bennett (b. 9 October 1964, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA; acoustic guitar/vocals), Shaw "Hawk' Wilson (b. Randall Edward Shaw Wilson, 10 July 1960, Topeka, Kansas, USA; drums), Smilin" Jay McDowell (b. 11 June 1969, Bedford, Indiana, USA; slap bass), and Donnie Herron (b. 23 September 1962, Steubenville, Ohio, USA; dobro/mandolin/fiddle).
