Selah
This contemporary Christian praise and worship band built up a strong following on the devotional circuit in the early years of the new millennium, and by the middle of the decade their music was starting to cross over to the mainstream charts. Brother and sister Nicol and Todd Smith, who had been singing together from childhood, formed Selah in the late 90s with their close friend, pianist Allan Hall. The group's name was taken from a Hebrew phrase meaning to lift up the voice in praise. Their 1999 debut Be Still My Soul spawned the CCM hits "It Is Well With My Soul", "One Thing I Know" and "Sweet, Sweet Song Of Salvation", and won the Inspirational Album Of The Year award at the 2000 Dove Awards. Further success followed in 2002 with the number 1 hits "Press On" and "Wonderful, Merciful Savior", and Dove Awards for Press On (Inspirational Album Of The Year) and "Hold On" (Traditional Recorded Gospel Song). The transitional Rose Of Bethlehem was less successful but the trio's fourth album Hiding Place (2004) returned the group to the top of the charts, with both "You Raise Me Up" and "All My Praise" reaching number 1 on the Christian charts. The group notched up a third Inspirational Album award when Hiding Place won top place at the 2005 awards. By this point the recently married Nicol Smith had left the group to embark on a solo career, with Todd Smith and Hall also releasing their own albums. Amy Perry was brought in to replace Smith, and made her recording debut on the 2006 duets album, Bless The Broken Road.
