Vigilantes Of Love
Formed in 1990 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Bill Mallonee (b. Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA), the Vigilantes Of Love spent the majority of their career on the cusp of a commercial breakthrough that ultimately eluded them. Former history teacher Mallonee played in a number of bands during the 80s, including Matching Fibers and Shelf Life before forming his own short-lived units, Bed Of Roses and the Cone Ponies. He recorded the Vigilantes Of Love's debut, Jugular, with Mark Hall (accordion) and John Evans (harmonica). This sparse, acoustic set provided a neat encapsulation of Mallonee's live act and was an early indicator of his faith-inspired lyrics. Mallonee and Hall were joined on the following year's Driving The Nails by an expanded line-up, including Alice Berry (vocals, ex-Cone Ponies) and Billy Holmes (mandolin/guitar/keyboards). R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck helped produce 1992's Killing Floor, recorded by the pared-down line-up of Mallonee and Holmes. A recording contract with Capricorn Records saw Mallonee putting together a more permanent band, recording the out-and-out rock album Welcome To Struggleville with Newton Carter (guitar), Joey Huffman (keyboards), David LaBruyere (bass) and Travis McNabb (drums).
