Anointed
A mixed-gender gospel trio masterminded by producers Mark Heimermann and Chris Harris, the Anointed's sound blends traditional church-singing with pop and R&B nuances. Their broad appeal was confirmed in 1996 when singles from their third album were serviced by Myrrh Records not just to gospel, but also Contemporary Christian and R&B stations. The group originally comprised four singer-songwriters, all born in Ohio. Steve Crawford, his sister Da'dra Crawford-Greathouse, Mary Tiller and Denise "Nee-C" Wallis began performing together in their home-town of Columbus in the early 90s. They had soon secured a contract with the local independent label Brainstorm, at that time distributed by Word Records. Crawford-Greathouse, reflecting on the group's debut, noted that "[it was] really heavy R&B gospel, because that was pretty much our surroundings growing up." They then switched to the Nashville-based gospel label Myrrh. The Call, with an accent on pop melodies to ensnare the Contemporary Christian audience, proved their breakthrough album. It collected three Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, a Stellar Award for Best Performance By A Group Or Duo, Contemporary, and a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. The attendant EP, "In God's Hands Now", also received significant mainstream exposure, as the quartet supported Groove Theory on a national promotional tour. Tiller departed in January 1996 prior to the release of Under The Influence, though this did not seem to impede their commercial ascendancy. In November the trio embarked on the multi-artist Christian music Christmas tour dubbed "Emmanuel". Their major label debut for Sony Records found the trio working with R&B producers Tony Rich and Keith Crouch in an attempt to corner the crossover market.
