The Story
A female folk-pop duo featuring singer/songwriter Jonatha Brooke (b. 23 January 1964, Illinois, USA) and vocalist Jennifer Kimball. The two women first played together (as Jonatha And Jennifer) while studying at Amherst College in the early 80s. After pursuing independent careers outside music, the duo reunited on a permanent basis in 1989 to record a demo. A recording contract with Green Linnet Records followed, and their debut album (as the Story) was released in 1990. It was reissued the following year by the duo's new label, Elektra Records. Brooke's husband, keyboard player Alain Mallet, also played with the duo, and brought a distinctive South American influence to bear on 1993's The Angel In The House, including bossa nova rhythms and Latin percussion. His co-producer was Ben Wittman. The album's packaging included quotes drawn from literary sources including Germaine Greer, Virginia Woolf and Harold Pinter, and Brooke's lyrics were certainly involved and complex, if ultimately self-conscious. Songs such as "When Two And Two Are Five" were deemed by critics to be exercises in soul-searching that remained unrewarding, despite the original way in which they were conceived and the intensity of the lyrics. Despite strong sales of the album the duo was dropped by Elektra, and both women inaugurated solo careers shortly afterwards.
