The Olivia Tremor Control
Based in Athens, Georgia, USA, this psych pop outfit formed part of the loose knit Elephant 6 Recording Company collective with bands such as Jeff Mangum's Neutral Milk Hotel, Robert Schneider's Apples In Stereo, Elf Power and the Gerbils. Will Cullen Hart (guitar/vocals) and Bill Doss (guitar/vocals) grew up in Ruston, Louisiana with fellow 60s enthusiasts Schneider and Mangum, playing and recording music together in bands such as Maggot and Cranberry Life Cycle. Hart, Doss and Mangum moved to Athens in 1990, where they formed Synthetic Flying Machine, which in turn evolved into the Olivia Tremor Control. This early line-up recorded the California Demise EP in 1995 before Mangum relocated to Seattle and then Denver to concentrate on Neutral Milk Hotel, although he continued to make guest appearances with the band. John Fernandes (bass) and Eric Harris (drums) were in place for the band's debut album, which, as its title suggested, was loosely based around the concept of an imaginary movie. Flitting dizzyingly between melodic 60s sunshine pop songs and surreal sound collages, Music From The Unrealized Film Script, Dusk At Cubist Castle was heralded upon arrival as a high point of 90s psychedelia. It was originally released with a bonus CD of ambient instrumentals (later issued as a separate CD), an avenue more fully explored by the band on their subsequent collaboration with the Black Swan Network.
