Bleach
Brothers Neil (b. 14 September 1965, Ipswich, Suffolk, England; guitar) and Nick Singleton (b. 2 February 1968, Ipswich, Suffolk, England; bass) acted as catalysts for Bleach when, in July 1989, they were joined by Steve Scott (b. 29 November 1963, Norwich, Norfolk, England; drums) and the initially reluctant vocalist, Salli Carson (b. 6 October 1966, Yorkshire, England). Within a year they had made their mark with the EP Eclipse - so called because it was actually recorded during an eclipse of the sun - on which their original, twisted, spikey guitar sound was praised by the national music press. The follow-up EP, Snag, was also acclaimed, with the track "Dipping" particularly singled out for praise. Tours of the UK warranted a compilation of the singles to continue the momentum. However, Bleach soon found themselves swimming against the tide in the UK indie press. Critics turned their attention towards the nascent "shoegazing" bands in preference to Bleach's more strident tones, and singer Carson shaved her head in an attempt to deflect accusations that she was a mere sex symbol.
