Smoke City
This UK band from London comprising Nina Miranda (vocals), Marc Brown (programming/turntables) and Chris Franck (b. 12 September 1968, Dsseldorf, Germany; guitar/keyboards), shot into the public eye when their atmospheric track "Underwater Love" was used as the soundtrack to a risqu Levis television advert in April 1997. Brown, a part-time DJ and apprentice engineer, constructed the looped backing track in the studio, over which the half-Brazilian Miranda added her distinctive half-sung, half-spoken multi-lingual vocals. Originally released in February 1995 the track gained encouraging airplay on independent radio, and was included on the influential compilation, Rebirth Of The Cool, Volume Six. With the addition of guitarist Franck, the trio signed a long-term contract with Jive Records and set about recording their debut Flying Away, a wondrous mix of trip-hop rhythms, Brazilian adventure and soulful vocals. Unfortunately, the release of the album was overshadowed by the attendant success of "Underwater Love", which reached the UK Top 5 and charted throughout Europe. The follow-up featured another impressively diverse range of musical styles, although sadly the band remains a cult item.
