Nicolette
b. Nicolette Suwoton, 7 January 1964, Glasgow, Scotland. Although born in Scotland, Nicolette was raised in Nigeria, France, Switzerland and Wales. She joined her first band, Calliope, in Cardiff, but originally rose to prominence as singer on the sample-based house hits of Shut Up And Dance in the early 90s. Their first female signing, her approach to singing was more blues-based and less shrill than many of the garage divas. She also wrote her own songs, demonstrating a keen talent on singles such as "Wicked Mathematics". Other collaborations with the Shut Up And Dance duo, such as "I Woke Up" and "Dove Song', are regarded by many as forerunners of the jungle and drum 'n' bass sound. Later she toured with Massive Attack, featuring on 1994's Protection, before signing a solo recording contract with Talkin" Loud Records. Her second album featured more political material such as the single "No Government". She was aided by some of the cream of the UK production teams, including 4 Hero and Plaid. In 1997, she released DJ-Kicks!, a compilation of her favourite club tracks mixed by Plaid. The following year she set up her own label, Early Records.
