Dave Angel
b. David Gooden, 13 May 1966, Chelsea, London, England. Based in Clapham, south London, techno DJ and recording artist Dave Angel's father was a professional jazz musician. As a result, he grew up listening to Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, and became a jazz session drummer by the age of 14. However, his background was also one of stifling poverty, his father buying him his first drum-kit the day the electricity was cut off. He released his debut single in 1989, shortly after returning from a nine-month prison term for possession of cannabis. He had recorded a bassline on a standard tape deck, and in a moment of inspiration, mixed it against a nearby copy of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)". Once approval had been given from RCA Records, who licensed the record, it was released as a white label, before Angel moved to Dave Dorrell's Love label for "Never Leave". He began his career in earnest with two strong EPs, Royal Techno and Of The Highest Order. The critically acclaimed Family EP followed in 1993, before Third Voyage EP (originally released in April 1991). He has maintained his broad musical vision: "People always use the word techno to describe what I do, but I prefer to call it 'future jazz'." His debut album was released in association with the Island Records' offshoot, Blunted, in 1995. A second and final long-player followed for Island in 1997, following which Angel recorded a mix compilation for React Music. More popular in Germany than his homeland, Angel continues to DJ at the Orbit club and to remix for various clients, including Sun Electric's "En-Trance", Katana for Eastern Bloc and the Seas Of Tranquillity EP for his own label, Rotation Records.
