Da Lata
Da Lata play a blend of Brazilian styles with a mellow jazz and funk sensibility. It is a project co-founded by producer/multi-instrumentalist Chris Franck (b. 12 September 1968, Dsseldorf, Germany) and DJ Patrick Forge (b. 21 May 1962, Ipswich, Suffolk, England). They originally played together as part of the band Batu, with whom they recorded a well-received single and made a number of explosive live appearances. They formed Da Lata in 1994 with Lee Hamblin, recording a single for United Future Organization's Brownswood label and producing remixes for everyone from Ruby to Carlinhos Brown. In 1995, following a reworking of Edu Lobo's "Ponteio", featuring Negrocan's vocalist Liliana Chachian and released on Far Out Records, the Da Lata project was put on hold, while Franck concentrated on work as a part of Smoke City. In 1998, Forge, Franck and Chachian re-formed Da Lata with Portugese percussionist Oli Savill, releasing "Pra Manha" and, in the following year, began work on the debut album. Songs From The Tin was released in 2000 to general acclaim. To promote the album Da Lata played a string of well-received live dates on which Forge DJed.
