Snapcase
This hardcore band was formed in Buffalo, New York, USA in 1991 by Daryl Taberski from the remains of his previous band, Solid State. At this point the line-up comprised Taberski (bass), Chris Galas (vocals), Scott Dressler (guitar), Joe Salemi (guitar), and Mike Kimaid (drums) made up the remainder of the band. After a couple of strong demos Snapcase signed to Victory Records, releasing the 7-inch single "Comatose' soon afterwards. Sessions for the band's debut album were complicated by the departures of Galas and Kimaid. Lookinglasself was completed with the addition of drummer Tim Redmond and bass player Bob Whiteside. Predominantly produced by hardcore legend Don Fury, the taut angular riffs and Taberski's vitriolic vocals garnered the band immediate attention. They toured heavily as a result, but it remained a part-time affair for the members, conducted through the summer months, as the majority of Snapcase devoted much of their time to college studies. After continuing this way for some time, they recorded the Steps EP in 1995. Dressler left shortly after to continue college full-time, and was replaced by Frank Vicario. A series of compilation appearances preceded 1997"s Progression Through Unlearning. Despite excellent reviews and favourable comparisons to Fugazi and Helmet, the band was more reluctant than ever to go back on the road. As a result the upcoming tour was cancelled and Snapcase effectively split up, but an uncancelled tour to Japan provided the impetus for the members to re-form. In 1999 the band, featuring new bass player Dustin Perry and with their profile rising, toured with the Deftones and Quicksand. Their eventual breakthrough came with the following year's Designs For Automotion, which transcended their hardcore roots and introduced them to a more mainstream metal/punk audience. The end of 2000 saw Snapcase close to concluding their studies and a permanent music career however fraught, beckoned.
