Cave In
Formed in 1995 in Methuen, Massachusetts, USA, by Stephen Brodsky (guitar) and Jay Frechette (vocals), the pair recruited Adam McGrath (guitar), Justin Matthes (bass), and John-Robert Conners (drums). Recording the Flypaper demo, the band's heavily metallic sound was greatly inspired by Converge (with whom Brodsky had previously played). Gigging around their home state the band came to the attention of Aaron Turner, the owner of cult label Hydra Head. A series of line-up changes followed, Frechette being in turn replaced by Dave Scrod and Caleb Schofield before Brodsky eventually took over on vocals. Schofield also replaced the departing Matthes and his temporary replacement Andy Kyte. The band's 1998 debut, Beyond Hypothermia, was a bruising collection of savage riffs, manic arrangements and barely intelligible screamed vocals, which helped define the metalcore sound of the late 90s. The rapidly released follow-up, Until Your Heart Stops, varied little, save for a stronger production that added to the already visceral edge.
