Revolting Cocks
The history of the US rock act Revolting Cocks goes back to the mid-80s when Al Jourgensen (also Ministry) met Belgians Richard 23 and Luc Van Acker in a Chicago pool hall. Their first single was "No Devotion", which made the PMRC's "Naughty 9" list on account of its blasphemy. The British Home Secretary Douglas Hurd later tried to prevent them entering the country by refusing them work permits. The lyrical scope of the band's debut offered no respite. Subject matter included rioting soccer fans, sitcom junkies and industrial accidents. Joined in 1987 by multi-instrumentalist William Rieflin, the next single, "You Often Forget", featured both "malignant" and "benign" versions in tribute to the media fascination of the time with Betty Ford's breasts. Richard 23 then departed for Front 242, and was replaced by Chris Connelly of Finitribe. Paul Barker of Ministry also played on and co-produced the half-live You Goddamned Son Of A Bitch, recorded at a Chicago show in September 1987. Beers, Steers + Queers was the band's second studio album, its title track a witty cod-machismo collision of cowboy kitsch and dialogue taken from the homosexual scenes in the movie Deliverance. A cover version of Olivia Newton-John's "Physical' also featured - basically a loop of someone screaming the title. Afterwards the band left Wax Trax! Records (as had Ministry, from whom RevCo took Barker, Mike Scaccia and Louie Svitek - other part-time members have included Raven of Killing Joke and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor). Linger Ficken" Good included a further bizarre cover version, this time Rod Stewart's "D'Ya Think I'm Sexy".
