Mauro Picotto
b. Turin, Italy. This DJ/producer came to prominence as a prolific writer of trance and techno material, but whereas a good deal of Italian trance has been derided as too hackneyed by the music press, Picotto's style satisfies fans and critics alike. Under the umbrella R.A.F. By Picotto for Media Records, Mauro produced several successful cuts such as "Bakerloo Symphony" as well as remix and production work for Cappella in partnership with his good friend Gianfranco Bortolotti. Picotto also worked alongside Mario Piu as label manager at the Italian BXR label. His large musical output is best experienced on the series of singles bearing reptile names, which led in part to his nickname of the "Lizard Man". Tracks such as "Iguana", "Komodo" and of course "Lizard" reveal a hybrid of tough techno and trance, with rolling bass sounds, driving synthesizer riffs and a willingness to experiment. "Like This Like That" is a good example of Picotto's more progressive approach. Meanwhile he has continued to produce more underground tracks for BXR, while co-writing with Bortolotti the popular vocal trance sounds of CRW, who had UK chart success with "I Feel Love" and "Lovin'". Picotto can claim a major part in the rise of hard house in Europe in 2000 and with it the fortunes of Nukleuz Records, who have established themselves as one of the most important dance music labels of the new millennium. Picotto's hits are all collected on The Double Album, a segued work that showcases his distinctive sound and demonstrates why his talents as writer and DJ are so highly sought after.
