Billie Ray Martin
b. Hamburg, Germany. Formerly the vocalist with 90s electro-dance unit Electribe 101, dance diva Martin has enjoyed commercial success as a solo artist. She spent time in London, England before making her first forays into music as singer with the soul band Billie And The Deep. After a few years playing the Berlin club circuit, Martin returned to London in the late 80s where she joined up with Joe Stevens, Les Fleming, Rob Cimarosti and Brian Nordhoff in Electribe 101. They enjoyed club hits with "Tell Me When The Fever Ended" and "Talking With Myself", two peerless tracks which matched house beats with Martin's strident vocals. She embarked on a solo career in 1992, enjoying success with the worldwide club hit "Your Loving Arms", which went on to reach the UK Top 10 in May 1995. "Running Around Town" and "Imitation Of Life" were also big club hits, and her debut album Deadline For My Memories received good reviews from both the mainstream and dance press. In 1999, Martin worked with Wilson Pickett on his comeback album, It's Harder Now. Her second album was recorded in Memphis, Tennessee with Al Green's backing band and guest vocals from Carla Thomas and Anne Peebles. 18 Carat Garbage was released in 2001 on Martin's own Sonnenstahl label.
