Blue Mountain
Blue Mountain has been compared to similarly styled US outfits such as Uncle Tupelo and Wilco over the years, owing to their knack for penning memorable roots rock-based compositions. Blue Mountain's roots lay in another outfit, the Hilltops, founded in 1988 in Oxford, Mississippi by eventual husband and wife Cary Hudson (b. Sumrall, Mississippi, USA; vocals/guitar) and Laurie Stirratt (b. New Orleans, Louisiana, USA; vocals/bass). After 1989's cassette-only debut Holler and 1991's Big Black River, the Hilltops split up, but Hudson and Stirratt opted to remain together, forming Blue Mountain shortly thereafter. Along with drummer Matt Brennan, the trio issued a self-titled debut in 1993 on their own 4 Barrel Records, before switching to the Roadrunner Records label. Further acclaimed but poor-selling albums were issued throughout the 90s, including Dog Days, Home Grown, and Tales Of A Traveler. The first of these releases featured new member Frank Coutch (drums), and then George Sheldon (bass) was brought in on Tales Of A Traveler, as Stirratt moved over to acoustic guitar. In addition to their Blue Mountain duties, Hudson and Stirratt formed their own record label during the late 90s, called Black Dog Records. Just a few months after the release of Blue Mountain's fifth release, Roots, in early 2001, Hudson and Stirratt split up Blue Mountain to concentrate on other projects.
