Camp Lo
Formed in the Bronx, New York, USA, hip-hop duo Camp Lo were heavily promoted by Profile Records at their launch in the mid-90s as an atypical, experimental rap act. With much of their musical influence derived from 70s disco culture, the group's sound defied the limiting preoccupation with east/west coast styles that had overtaken hip-hop. Despite this, some critics still vilified their "retro" use of "nostalgic grooves and beats'. Their debut album, the accomplished Uptown Saturday Night, comprised 15 tracks and demonstrated Emerald Geechie Suede (b. 1976) and Sonny Cheba's (b. 1974) affinity with contemporary hip-hop rhythms as well as a myriad of other styles. Guests included De La Soul and Digable Planets, groups with whom frequent comparisons were made in the press. Having signed with Profile in 1995, the duo had already toured with De La Soul during the winter of 1996. Their debut was produced by talented hip-hop newcomer Ski, previously best-known for his work with Bahmadia, Lil" Kim and Jay-Z. Both the attendant singles, "Coolie High" and "Luchini (Aka This Is It)' attracted widespread attention among the hip-hop press" taste-makers.
