Army Of Lovers
Camp Swedish outfit described by one unkind journalist as the "Au Pairs From Hell', Army Of Lovers originally comprised Alexander Bard (b. 17 March 1961, Blemfontain, South Africa; vocals/guitar), Jean-Pierre Barda (b. 7 March 1967, Paris, France; vocals/drums) and La Camilla (b. Camilla Henemark, 23 October 1964, Stockhom, Sweden; vocals). Bard was the semi-accomplished musician and composer, while Barda was originally a hairdresser to the Swedish Royal Family. They began in 1987 after being inspired by the get-up-and-go attitudes of S'Express and other DJ-led groups. Army Of Lovers" approach was simple: "We are pop stars, not musicians. As kids we were always acting about in front of the mirror and miming to Abba records or whatever, and all we're doing today is miming to our own records.' Their breakthrough singles, with accompanying lurid videos, were 1991's "Crucified" and "Obsession". Shortly afterwards Michaela Dornoville de la Cour (b. 16 August 1961, Helsingborg, Sweden; vocals/keyboards) replaced Camilla, who shared commitments to her own club in Stockholm and was unable to tour (the club was distinguished by the numerous photo-montages of herself that clients were invited to lick as they entered). Dominika Peczynski (b. 19 September 1971, Warsaw, Poland; vocals/bass) was added to the line-up in 1993, and two years later de la Cour was replaced by the returning La Camilla. The band drew their popularity from Europe rather than the UK, where their shock tactics and outlandish dress sense ultimately proved too garish. After disbanding in 1996, Army Of Lovers reunited in 2001 to record a new album. Both La Camilla and de la Cour were present at the recording sessions.
