Astral Projection
The roots of this pioneering Israeli trance outfit lie in the group SFX, formed in 1989 by Lior Perlmutter and Avi Nissim, who had already made a name for himself as an acid house DJ. After two years of recording and playing in Israel's underground clubs, they had their first release, "Monster Mania", on the Belgian label Music Man Records. During the early 90s Perlmutter spent some time in the USA working as an engineer, and SFX consequently brought out four singles on X-Rave Records. Later, Yaniv Haviv, whom Perlmutter had known since childhood, and Guy Sabbag joined SFX back in Israel and in 1994 all four formed Trust In Trance Records. Their debut album, Trust In Trance Vol. 1, was released on that label through Phonokol Records later that year, after which Sabbag left to pursue his own interests. At this point Perlmutter, Nissim and Haviv opened their Dance City studio, where they began recording their second album as Astral Projection. Trust In Trance Vol. 2 entered the Israeli album chart at number 2 and became popular with a number of European DJs; two tracks in particular, "Mahadeva" (released as a single on Transient Records in 1996) and "Power Gen", were favourites of Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold. Released in the UK through TIP Records, Trust In Trance was their most successful album yet and helped them to break into the European market. It was supported by the singles "Enlightened Evolution" and "People Can Fly" and by over 30 live shows throughout Israel and Europe.
